What Homeopathy Isn’t…

Happy First Day of December. It’s been a bit since my last blog post and so much has been going on. Check out the next blog post for that!

Today I want to talk about what homeopathy isn’t. In my previous blog post, I talked about what homeopathy is, but there is a TON of misconception and misinformation still about homeopathy and what is actually is. So today, I’m going to talk about some of the common things I hear associated with homeopathy and how they are not what homeopathy is.

Homeopathy isn’t “home remedies”

Homeopathy isn’t the word for the many varieties of “home remedies.” Its not things like Vitamins, supplements, minerals, herbs, or essential oils or any other “remedy” that grandma’s have to help with sickness. Homeopathy is a Natural Medicine. The word homeopathy means “homo” = like and “pathy” = disease. Remedies cure in sick people what they can cause in healthy people. For example, the remedy allium cepa aka onion causes running nose and burning and water eyes. Therefore, in a person who has those symptoms, it can cure. Think of a person with allergies. This is a very basic example of the concept of “like cures like.” This idea of “like cures like” goes all the way back to Hippocrates. Homeopathy is a completely stand alone modality and a complete system of medicine.

Homeopathy isn’t “handmade”

Going back to grandma’s remedies, our remedies are not something that is generally made in your kitchen. They are made from substances that are all around us. Things like plants, animal byproducts, and minerals. They are produced in homeopathic pharamacies which is goverened by the HPUS which is the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States. They also are governed by the FDA.

Homeopathy isn’t new age, spiritual, or witch craft

Being a Christian homeopath, this bothers me the most. Homeopathy was founded by Samuel Hahnemann, a German doctor in the 1700s. It is an entire system of medicine with over 200 years of clinic evidence and lots of evidence based research to prove it’s efficacy. Up until the early 20th century, homeopathy was the medicine that was practiced by medical doctors and trained medical professionals. It wasn’t until the 1940's and the creation of The American Medical Association that homeopathy took a backseat to “modern medicine.” However, homeopathy is still used around the world and along side of other medical modalities. Homeopathy is starting to make a comeback in the modern times thanks to moms looking for a natural solution to health, like minded practitioners, and homeopaths who are out there educating the masses about the amazing health benefits of homeopathy.

Homeopathy isn’t a substitute for medical care

Most homeopaths are not medical doctors, and we don’t try or claim to be. Modern medicine has many benefits and, when appropriate, should be used. Both can be used in conjunction with the other without any contraindications. If doctors and homeopaths can work together, its even better and an effective option for healing.

Homeopathy doesn’t revolved around a medical diagnosis

In homeopathy, we want to know how you have or experience your symptoms. Anxiety, constipation, acne, asthma, PMS, ear infections, teething, menopause, depression, or ADHD all have symptoms that are common to each illness, but each person experience is different. The different is what homeopaths want to know. The nuances in symptoms is what helps us find the correct remedy. For example, for someone suffering with anxiety...one person could be stuck in bed, too scared to get out and face the world and another person could be rageful, angry, and lash out at the smallest thing. Those two people who need two completely different remedies.

Homeopathy isn’t invasive or harsh

In the Organon, written by Samuel Hahnemann, he states, “The highest ideal of cure is the rapid, gentle, and permanent restoration of health.” With the correct remedy, people get better, often times better than expected from illness or injuries and sometimes even escape the need for surgery.

Homeopathy isn’t expensive

Compared to modern conventional medicine and pharmaceuticals, homeopathy remedies and treatment is very affordable. You can get single remedies for $8-$10 oer tube that will last for years, maybe even a lifetime. The fee’s for working with a homeopath, are less than a doctors visit (without insurance) and can help avoid further progress of your illness.

I hope this blog post has shed some light onto some of the common misconceptions that people have about homeopathy. If you’d like to read the blog post about what homeopathy is, you can find it right here: https://www.throughthestormhomeopathy.com/blog/so-what-is-homeopathy
